Today in class, the main idea was how religions came to existence, hence the opening question: "Are religions created, discovered, revealed, or none of the above?" With this question we had a four corners discussion, in which each corner of the class room representing one of the answers listed above. Most students in Period Blue 2 either thought that religions were revealed or discovered.
A prayer called the "Prayer of Our Lady of Good Counsel" was presented by Rachel Henry. A video called "World on Fire" by Sarach McLachlan was also presented. The link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0O2LMqnHGg . The video was to represent how easily we take things for granted, and how unimportant things that money is spent on can be spent to better the lives of millions of people around the world.
We discussed the article "A Synopsis of Eliade's The Sacred and the Profane." We were asked to look for words in the text that we didn't know the meaning of and that would help us understand the article more. Some of the words that this group thought should be defined:
- heirophany: breakthrough of the sacred into human experience
- homo relisiosus: the being par excellence prepared to appreciate such as a break through.
- The Sacred: which is a transcendent referent such as the gods, God, or Nirvana.
- cosmogony: creation of the universe
-soteriology: study of salvation
- theophany: appearance of God
-ontology: study of God creating world
